IMC Bible Study End of Romans 5

IMC Bible Study End of Romans 5

12Therefore, just as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men, because all sinned-- 13for until the Law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law.14Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over those who had not sinned in the likeness of the offense of Adam, who is a type of Him who was to come.

  • Paul is trying to get to talk about how this free gift of salvation IS but he bumps the opposite real quick
  • Sin entered the world through Adam - and because of Sin DEATH also entered the world - and it infected the entire human race!  The brokenness spread from Adam and touch every other man until the NEW ADAM came.
  • Jesus HAD to be Human to save us - but he also had to be another “son of God” just as Adam was because he was to serve as the NEW Adam - the beginner of a restored race!
  • Sin may not have been known in the specific but its influence (through death) was still being seen in all the human race

15But the free gift is not like the transgression For if by the transgression of the one the many died, much moredid the grace of God and the gift by the grace of the one Man, Jesus Christ, abound to the many.

  • The sin that was brought into the world and the Gospel are NOT mirror opposites of one another.  The stand opposed but they are different
  • Adam’s sin brought death for all men
  • Jesus GIFT brings MUCH MORE than just a cancellation of that sin

16The gift is not like [that which came] through the one who sinned; for on the one hand the judgment [arose] from one[transgression] resulting in condemnation, but on the other hand the free gift [arose] from many transgressions resulting in justification.

  • the sin of Adam was a singular sin
  • Jesus death on the cross eliminates BILLIONS OF SINS over BILLIONS of lives!

17For if by the transgression of the one, death reigned through the one, much more thosewho receive the abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness will reign in life through the One, JesusChrist.

  • Sin and death reigned because of Adam’s sin
  • Because of Jesus Cross - righteousness will Reign
    • death is an ending a finality
    • righteousness is life and life more abundant!

18So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. 19For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous. 20The Law came in so that the transgression would increase; but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more,21so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through JesusChrist our Lord.

IMC Romans 5:2-3

2throughwhom also we have obtained our introduction by faith into this grace in which we stand; and we exult in hope of the glory of God.

  • Jesus introduced us by faith into grace - IN WHICH WE NOW STAND
    • Grace is not the beginning of the Christian walk - Grace is all of it - every day - every moment is grace flowing from God into us -
    • Grace is:
      • not a “free pass” so we aren’t punished when we are bad
      • Grace is any and every gift that comes from God
        • Not only can we not be saved by our works but we cannot recieve ANY of God’s gifts through works
        • God is not impressed with our attempts at DOING righteousness on our own
        • We must BE righteous as we receive it from Him every moment by grace
        • His gifts transform our inward parts - they change our appetites and our desires
      • The only way we can defeat the power of sin is Grace
      • Justification made us “just as if we never sinned” - and God’s grace continues forward it is our victory
        • we receive God’s nature as a gift by grace through faith
      • Access into the FAVOR of God
        • We have done more than escape punishment - we have obtained FAVOR
        • WE STAND as the FAVORITE of God - he really likes us - he seeks to do us good - he is eager and excited about giving us good gifts
      • BY FAITH - this is the only way to access God’s grace - we have to believe He exists and rewards those who earnestly seek Him - you have to believe and not doubt that God likes you - and is actively seeking your joy
        • God is employing all of his omnipotent strength in the past present and future to lead you into enjoying Him to the fullest and more and more forever - His Glory - Your Joy
      • AND BEYOND - Exult in the hope of His glory - We are being glorified - Transformed into his image as carriers of the glory of God.  The Lord has called us to REFLECT His beauty forever as the redeemed ones and the BRIDE of Christ.

3And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings aboutperseverance; 4and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was givento us.

  • We exult in our tribulations - our troubles are NEVER about punishment
    • God punished our sin completely on Jesus cross and there is no punishment left for them
    • Now we are a people of the good news - even “bad news” is good news for us - because we have peace with God
    • He is now USING our pain and trial - even that which is a direct consequence of incorrect action by us - to lead us deeper into Himself - to teach us to receive grace and to trust Him

More Discussion and Romans 5:1

More Discussion and Romans 5:1

1Therefore, having been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ,

  • This is unbelievably massive reality
  • God cannot abide sin - it is the cancer of the universe -
    • God’s DNA which fills the universe now corrupted because of Sin - anything that Sin touches devalues the glory of God which is the purpose for which the universe was created
    • Sin is the anti-creation
  • I am a creator of sin - I have been my whole life - infested with it -  a carrier
    • Therefore God had set his wrath upon me
    • He loved me no question - but his wrath was set upon me because of my sin
  • NOW - I have been justified - made just as if I had never sinned - declared righteous by faith -
    • I have peace with God - his wrath is not longer set upon me

Justification by Faith Evidenced in Old Testament

1What then shall we say that Abraham, our forefather according to the flesh, has found?

  • this is Paul’s master stroke -
    • first he connects Jews and gentiles through sin
    • NOW he connects them via Faith
    • He goes back to Abraham the Father of all the Jews and reveal him to be a man of Faith not works

2For if Abraham was justified by works, he has something to boast about, but not before God.

  • No part of salvation can glorify man. It has to be God that does it all
    • so that God can receive the Glory
    • So that no man can say he is above any other

  • Genesis 15:6
    • “Fear not Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great”.  I love the way God works Abram in this moment.  He uses his promise to stir Abram to request.  God want’s Abram to ask for a son.  God wants to give Abram a son.  God has already indirectly promised Abram he would have children, but he doesn’t come out directly and tell him that children were coming.  I believe this was another test of Abram’s knowledge of God’s character.  “Will Abram be bold enough and have enough faith to ask me for this?  Does Abram know me to be that generous?”  Abram was bold enough to ask and WOW did God respond!  “Look toward heaven and number the stars, if you are able to number them.”  then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be”. And he believed the Lord and he counted it to him as righteousness.”  (Gen 15:5-6)
It was in this moment that Abram was counted righteous.  Faith rose up in Abram’s heart in response to the promise of God and grace was released.  Grace that changed the course of human history.  God and Abram then go through a ritual of covenant sacrifice that binds Abram and God together in this purpose.  Abram is given a vision of the captivity of his offspring in Egypt and God’s promise that they will be delivered.  This one moment of faith unleashed a promise of children, a promise of an inheritance of the land, a moment of prophetic revelation, and the deliverance of his offspring 400 years in the future.  Moses was called forth as a deliverer here in this moment of agreement with and faith in the promise of God.  Abram looked into the heart of Father God.  He saw the promise, he believed it, and out of this moment he and all his generations and eventually all of the families on the earth received it.
How many promises are hidden in the heart of Abba that we have not loved Him enough or known Him enough to see?  How many things are kept in his generous heart because we have not looked past our insecurities and our failures and into his gracious and loving soul and believed that He just might be better than we thought he was?
  • John 6:29 - Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent."

4Now to the one who works, his wage is not credited as a favor, but as what is due.

  • If you have earned your salvation -YOU receive the Glory - it is your due

5But to the one who does not work, but believes in Him who justifies the ungodly, his faith is credited as righteousness,

  • to the one WHO DOES NOT WORK
  • but believes
  • in Him who justifies the ungodly - Our beautiful savior - the justifier of the ungodly
    • We put our trust in Him
    • We do not attempt to ADD anything
    • We simply receive His justification

6just as David also speaks of the blessing on the man to whom God credits righteousness apart from works:

  • Check this - David Saw justification by faith 3000 years before Christ!  He saw that this was the way God was going to work
  • By FAITH
    • his lawless Deeds have been forgiven
    • his sins have been covered
    • the Lord will NOT take his sins into account

9Is this blessing then on the circumcised, or on the uncircumcised also? For we say, "FAITH WAS CREDITEDTO ABRAHAM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS." 10How then was it credited? While he was circumcised, oruncircumcised? Not while circumcised, but while uncircumcised;

  • So IN Abraham the Jews and Greeks are made one
  • Here is a man who was not (yet) circumcised
  • Not a jew because there were no jews yet
  • Not saved by his works

11and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them, 12and the fatherof circumcisionto thosewho not onlyare of the circumcision, but who alsofollowin the stepsof the faithof our fatherAbrahamwhich he had while uncircumcised.

  • Circumcision was a sign of what had already happened inside the man
  • God changed him first and the - “works” were simply a seal of the righteousness he had received as a gift
  • God did this in Abraham BEFORE he made the Hebrew Covenant so that the way could be made for both the children of Abraham AND any other who would have faith in God to save them in the future

13For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law,but through the righteousness of faith. 14For if those who are of the Law are heirs, faith is made void and the promise is nullified; 15for the Law brings about wrath, but where there is no law, there also is no violation.

  • It is either the law or faith it cannot be

16For this reason [it is] by faith, in order that [it may be] in accordance with grace, so that the promise will be guaranteed to all the descendants, not only to those who are of the Law, but also to those who are of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all,

  • This is what Jesus meant when he said “God can raise up descendants for Abraham from these stones
  • The descendants of Abraham are not only of His Blood - but of His Faith - men and women who carry the DNA of belief in a God who justifies the ungodly
    • So Abraham is our Father
    • Father Abraham had MANY sons - I am one of them and so are you!

17(as it is written, "A FATHER OF MANY NATIONS HAVE I MADE YOU") in the presence of Him whom he believed, [even] God, who gives life to the dead and calls into being that which does not exist.

 18In hope against hope he believed, so that he might become a father of many nations accordingto that which had been spoken, "SO SHALL YOUR DESCENDANTS BE.” 19Without becoming weak in faith he contemplated his own body, now as good as dead since he was about a hundred years old, and the deadness of Sarah's womb;

  • He believed what God had said
  • Even though He looked at his own body and his wife’s and KNEW the truth that what God had promised was IMPOSSIBLE

20yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God,

  • He did not waiver - He refused to doubt God’s promises

21and being fully assured that what God had promised, He was able also to perform.

  • He trusted in the character and nature of God
  • If He SAID He would do it
    • then HE CAN
    • then HE WILL
  • This is the kind of person God can use to change the world!
    • William Carrey - “Expect great things from God. Attempt great things for God.”
      • He was the Father of the missionary movement that carries on to this day

22Therefore IT WAS ALSO CREDITED TO HIM AS RIGHTEOUSNESS. 23Now not for his sake only was it written that it was credited to him, 24but for our sake also, to whom it will be credited, as those who believe in Him who raised Jesus our Lord from the dead, 25[He] who was delivered over because of our transgressions, and was raised because of our justification.

  • God began this in Abraham but it carries on to today - God put that in His word so we could follow Abraham’s example
  • This is a nice little couplet
    • He was given over for our transgressions and raised for our justification
    • He was punished and died because we were sinners - but he was raise from the Dead because he was the savior

Romans 3

1Then what advantage has the Jew? Or what is the benefit of circumcision?

2Greatin everyrespect.First of all, that they were entrustedwith the oraclesof God.

  • the Jewish people are God’s people - only the first of the beautiful things about what God has done for the Jewish people is that they are the ones He has chosen carry his revelation to mankind.  They were supposed to be His messengers
  • remember that is just point one - there is much more

3What then? If some did not believe, their unbelief will not nullify the faithfulness of God, will it?

  • The Jewish people did not do what God chose them to do - but that doesn’t mean God’s plan failed or that God’s faithfulness is nullified

4May it never be! Rather, let God be found true, though every man [be found] a liar, as it is written, "THAT YOU MAY BE JUSTIFIED IN YOUR WORDS, AND PREVAIL WHEN YOU ARE JUDGED.”

  • This needs to be thought of when people talk about the church and use it as an argument against the gospel
    • i. "Should any man say that the promise of God had failed toward him, let him examine his heart and his ways, and he will find that hehas departed out of that way in which alone God could, consistent with his holiness and truth, fulfill the promise." (Clarke)
    • The general consensus of opinion is nothing to a Christian. He believes God's word, and he thinks more of that than of the universal opinion of men (Spurgeon)
  • No amount of human hypocrisy can stop God’s plan
  • no amount of human failure can keep the Lord from doing what he has chosen to do.
    • He knew they would disobey
    • He has it figured out

5But if our unrighteousness demonstrates the righteousness of God, what shall we say? The God who inflictswrath is not unrighteous, is He? (I am speaking in human terms.)

  • Here is another point in his argument - So if God knew they were going to be unrighteous and he used that to glorify himself how can he judge them for being unrighteous?
  • It all came out good right?
  • How can God be mad?
  • it’s not fair.

6May it never be! For otherwise, how will Godjudge the world? 7But if through my lie the truth of God abounded to His glory, why am I also still being judged as a sinner? 8And why not [say] (as we are slanderously reported and as some claim that we say), "Let us do evilthat good may come "? Their condemnation is just.

  • Evil cannot be justified by God’s use of that evil to glorify himself.  God will do what God will do but we are called to obediance and worship

9What then? Are we better than they? Not at all; for we have already charged that both Jews and Greeks are allunder sin;

  • Even those who use this justification are not worse than us.  No one is better than annoying else

19Now we know that whatever the Law says, it speaks to those who are under the Law, so that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God; 20because by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law [comes] the knowledge of sin.

  • THIS is what the Law does - it can ONLY Accuse man and glorify God.  That is all it was meant to do.
  • The Law accuses those who have heard it and are bound to it - but those who have not heard it and are not bound to it still stand accused.
  • The POINT is the law cannot save - that is the purpose of this WHOLE discussion

Justification by Faith

21But now apart from the Law [the] righteousness of God has been manifested, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets,

  • apart from the law - without the law’s help and not through the power of the law.
  • the law and the prophets do bear WITNESS to this righteousness but it does not depend upon them!

 22even [the] righteousness of God

  • The law is a mirror of the righteousness of God
  • The Gospel is an extension of the righteousness of God - it is the REAL thing that the Law can only testify to.  It is the true character and nature of Jesus.  The law only measures it and says it is real it is an imprint.
    • your fingerprint can tell us that you are you but your identity does not derive from you finger print

 through faith in Jesus Christ for all those who believe;

  • Faith in Jesus is the way we receive this righteousness
  • John 6:29 - Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent."

for there is no distinction; 23for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

  • No one is righteous - not Jew or Greek - or anyone else but God everyone else has fallen short.

24being justified as a gift by His gracethrough the redemption which is in Christ Jesus;

  • The ONLY way to receive the righteousness of God is
    • as a gift - unearned
    • by his Grace - for FREE
    • through Jesus redemption

25whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith.

  • God DISPLAYED Jesus publicly to all the earth, to all of Heaven
  • Propitiation
    • The mercy seat of God - the place on the ark between the cherubim where the blood was placed once a year - we are allowed to come close to Him
    • Expiate - to ATONE - to make amends - to appease.  God’s anger was quenched - God’s wrath was ended - all that stood against us was removed from the record

 [This was] to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed overthe sins previously committed;

  • He was showing himself to be righteous in forgiving all those he had forgiven

26for the demonstration, [I say], of His righteousness at the present time, so that He would be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

  • God has made it possible for himself to be both JUST AND FORGIVING simultaneously
    • Just because Sin cannot go unpunished
    • Forgiving because He has punished his son and not us.

27Where then is boasting? It is excluded.

  • How can ANYONE boast when they did not earn their righteousness they only received it as a gift from God?
  • No one can glory in this righteousness but Jesus himself who paid the whole price!

By what kind of law? Of works? No, but by a law of faith.

28For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law.

  • Justified by faith
  • declared righteous
  • Just as if I never sinned

29Or is God [the God] of Jews only? Is He not [the God] of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also, 30since indeed God who will justify the circumcised by faithand the uncircumcised through faith is one.

  • For all people - in the righteousness that come from faith we are made one.  There is no difference.
  • The ground is level at the foot of the cross
  • equally condemned so that we might be equally REDEEMED!!!

31Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law.

  • This is the big question!
  • Does this mean the law means nothing?  NOPE
  • If Jesus had to die to appease the law then obviously God cares about it
  • You have been saved UNTO righteousness not unto nothing.
  • The Gospel EMPOWERS us to go BEYOND the law and live out of love which is far greater than the law
  • "'Twas for my sins my dearest Lord.

    Hung on the cursed tree.

And groan'd away his dying life,

For thee, my soul, for thee.

"O how I hate those lusts of mine.

    That crucified my Lord;

Those sins that pierc'd and nail'd his flesh.

    Fast to the fatal wood.

"Yes, my Redeemer, they shall die,

    My heart hath so decreed;

Nor will I spare the guilty things.

    That made my Saviour bleed."

Romans 2:1-5

Romans 2:1-5

1Therefore you have no excuse, everyone of you who passes judgment, for in that which you judge another, you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things.

  • This portion of scripture is Paul doing something he will do a few times in this book.  He is talking to a fictional jewish person.  One who is NOT YET SAVED.  The principals are true regardless but it helps to know what he is up to.
  • There is no human who has better standing before God than another - OTHER THAN CHRIST
  • we have no place to think ourselves more righteous than anyone else.

2And we know that the judgment of God rightly falls upon those who practicesuch things. 3But do you suppose this, O man, when you pass judgment on those who practice such things and do the same [yourself], that you will escape the judgment of God?

  • He is just preaching Jesus - Luke 6 and Matt 7
    • take the plank out of your own eye FIRST
    • lets remember that we are just as sinful as anyone we would pass judgement on.

4Or do you think lightly of the riches of His kindness and tolerance and patience, not knowing that the kindness of God leads you to repentance?

  • Whatever God HAS shown us has come from the glorious kindness of God - not from our own worth.
  • And God has been exercising that goodness toward us in order to guide us to repentance - to change who we are.  Not to reinforce our thoughts about how WORTHY we are!
  • You do not receive blessing based on your righteousness you receive it because of GODS kindness.

5But because of your stubbornness and unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath for yourself in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God,

  • If we live under the kindness of God for so long and stay the SAME we are making our punishment worse and worse
  • let every ounce of grace God pours into our hearts turn us and cause us to change the way we think about ourselves and about God - repent

Romans 1:20 The Attributes of God

Romans 1:20 The Attributes of God

19because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them.

  • That which is known about God EVIDENT (manifest, visible) WITHIN THEM
    • Every human being knows about God - more in vs 20
    • “within them” something about our the stamp of God’s own nature upon the human race
  • God MADE it evident to them - God is a God who REVEALS Himself
    • The Naked God

20For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternalpower and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.

  • Creation is God’s self-expression - “what has been made” the greek word is “poiema” which is where we get our word “poem”
    • invisible attributes
      • the things which are eternally true about God
      • those dimensions of character and personality that make God - God - Here is a list from “the Knowledge of the Holy"
        • The self existence of God - He is the "I AM"
        • The Self sufficiency of God - Psalm 50:12 “If I were hungry, I would not tell you, for the world and its fullness are mine."
        • The Eternality of God - He is outside of time - he is every when.
        • God’s infinitude - Everything God is He is that infinitely
        • The Immutability of God  - He does not change
        • The Divine Omniscience - he knows everything - about all times and places
        • The Wisdom of God - he understands everything - he knows HOW it all works
        • The Divine Transcendence - he is beyond everything - nothing compares with him
        • God’s Omnipresence - he is everywhere all the time
        • The Faithfulness of God - He is always like himself - he never forgets or goes back on a promise
        • The Goodness of God - He is always good
        • The Justice of God - he is always just - that is not the same thing as “fair"
        • The Mercy of God - He delights in NOT doling out judgment
        • The Grace of God - He loves to give to those who do not deserve and cannot earn
        • The Love of God - He is wildly passionate about YOU to all of His extremes
        • The Holiness of God - He is perfectly holy and utterly without sin
        • The sovereignty of God - He is in control of all things all the time
    • eternal power
    • divine nature
      • He is God and WE are not
      • consider the gap between the fruit fly and the Arch Angel - the gap between God and the Arch Angel is infinitely larger than that.
  • Understood through what has been made
    • creation makes these things clear to us
    • our OWN EXISTENCE makes these things clear to us
    • you were built with an internal compass pointing you back to God
    • The ONLY thing that keeps us from being just like God is our own stubborn choice to ignore who and what we are.

IMC Romans 1.15-20

IMC Romans 1.15-20

16For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes,to the Jew first and also to the Greek. 17For in it [the] righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith;as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS [man] SHALL LIVE BY FAITH.”

  • I am not ashamed of the Gospel
    • he suffered so much
    • he left his culture and all he held dear
    • the world HATES the Gospel - the Jews Hate the Gospel
    • 1 Cor 1:22-25 "22For Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, 23but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to Jews and folly to Gentiles, 24but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men."
      • to the Greek - foolishness - a CRUCIFIED GOD?????
      • to the Jew - a stumbling block - they have to give up their self-righteousness to gain God - like they tried to use a ladder to reach the first floor
  • For it is the power of God
    • The Gospel the good news IS the power of God!
    • It has everything in it to accomplish all God wants it to accomplish - this seemingly simple thing “Good News” CHANGES EVERYTHING
      • "mighty to the pulling down of strongholds," 2 Corinthians 10:4-5.
      •  Jeremiah 23:29, "Is not my word like as a fire? saith the Lord; and like a hammer that breaketh the rock in pieces?”
      • Hebrews 4:12 "For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.”
      • The gospel is certainly news, but it is more than information; it has an inherent power. "The gospel is not advice to people, suggesting that they lift themselves. It is power. It lifts them up. Paul does not say that the gospel brings power, but that it is power, and God's power at that." (Morris)
      • It does not teach us how to live - it empowers us to live the way we were created to live
    • In THIS NEWS lies the power to defeat sin.
      • to find forgivness
      • to live completely FREE
    • to be SAVED - saved from ourselves (not to SAVE OURSELVES) But to be saved - rescued - from the death that is at work in us destroying us stealing us from our creator and all the destiny he has for us.
    • We are saved UNTO eternal life - always getting better for ever and ever life
  • To everyone who believes
    • this is how we access and experience this power - belief
    • this is the ONLY WAY - faith  - we cannot earn the power of God for salvation - we must believe in what Jesus did.

Unbelief and Its Consequences

18For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men who suppress the truth in unrighteousness,

  • The “wrath” of God - Do NOT forget who God is!
    • HIs wrath is not unloving - it is BORN of His love
    • His wrath is not unthinking or unhinged - God cannot “lose control” of himself
    • This is God’s righteous anger toward all that would steal his loved ones from Him
  • He is acting in opposition to unrighteousness that has manifest as suppression of the truth

Romans 1:7-15

Romans 1:7-15

7to all who are beloved of God in Rome, called [as] saints:

  • These were the ones to who he was writing the letter.  We cannot forget the context!
  • Called as saints - the word saints means - the set apart or consecrated ones - those God has chosen for Himself and set apart for only His use

Grace to you and peace from God our Fatherand the Lord Jesus Christ.

  • Grace and Peace - the siamese twins of Paul’s letters.
  • This is a combined Greek and Jewish greeting
    • Grace - the Greek part of the greeting
    • Peace - Shalom the jewish part
    • He knows his audience and he speaks in ways that they will find receivable and understandable

8First, I thank my God through Jesus Christ for you all,

  • Through Jesus Christ
    • Our relationship with God is WHOLY brought about through Jesus
    • worship
    • prayer
    • blessings etc All come to us through Jesus because we are IN Christ.
      • surrounded by him
      • filled with him

because your faith is being proclaimed throughoutthe whole world.

  • It must have been utterly shocking for the world that a small Jewish sect had taken root in the center of culture

9For God, whom I serve in my spirit in the [preaching of the] gospel of His Son, is my witness [as to] how unceasingly I make mention of you, 10always in my prayers making request, ifperhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you.

  • Paul really wants to go and see the Christians in Rome
  • Paul’s intercession for the churches - we must be a people of prayer!

11For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established;

  • He desired to see them for their good
  • He carried a grace - we all carry graces
    • there are things that God has designed us to carry and to distribute
    • we are stewards of the grace of God

12that is, that I may be encouraged together with you [while] among you, each of us by the other's faith, both yours and mine.

  • He also desired to receive from them the grace that they carried
  • ministry is ALWAYS a 2 way street
    • the minister pours out
    • he also receives
    • it is a relationship - a partnership
    • When brothers and sisters in Christ come together Jesus is there - powerful things take place

13I do not wantyou to be unaware, brethren, that often I have planned to come to you (and have been prevented so far)so that I may obtain some fruit among you also, even as among the rest of the Gentiles. 14I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. 15So, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome.

  • Under obligation - a debtor
    • to Greeks and Jews - “The Wise” and “the foolish”
    • He felt he was called to make the most of every opportunity to preach the Gospel to every Gentile to whom he could preach it

Romans 1.2-5

Romans 1.2-5

2which He promised beforehand through His prophets in the holy Scriptures,

  • God has been working and dreaming about this!
  • He has been planning and moving and speaking for thousands of years excited about saving you.
  • Amos 3:7 7Surely the Lord GOD does nothing Unless He reveals His secret counsel To His servants the prophets.
    • God always wants human agreement and partnership in everything he does
    • That is why he calls us to pray - your kingdom come, your will be done
    • God has not been able to keep the secret of his GREAT Plan from His friends!

3concerning His Son, who was born of a descendant of David according to the flesh,

4who was declared the Son of God with power by the resurrection from the dead,

  • Jesus resurrection is absolutely important
  • 1 Cor 15:13-14 13But if there is no resurrection of the dead, not even Christ has been raised; 14and if Christ has not been raised, then our preaching is vain, your faith also is vain.
  • If Jesus only forgave our sins but did not have power to defeat death then WE would be be looking forward to new life.  We would not be able to experience new life NOW.  His resurrection life released into us IS our new creation and OUR resurrection from the Dead

according to the Spirit of holiness, Jesus Christ our Lord,

  • It was the Holy Spirit who raised Jesus from the Dead
  • He is the Holy Spirit - the Spirit of Holiness - He causes holiness - he makes us just like Jesus

5through whom we have received grace and apostleship

  • Jesus gives grace -
    • Grace is underserved favor - not earned but given - unearnable
    • The power of God to
  • Apostleship - authority, power, position, platform

to bring about [the] obedience of faith among all the Gentiles for His name's sake,

  • The obedience of faith
    • This is the Christian life
    • faith produces obedience
      • belief produces action or it is not belief
      • faith is the pathway to righteousness
      • we believe God is who he says he is, we believe God does what he says he will do, we believe he is FOR us so we obey! - TRUSTING
    • Faith IS obedience
      • John 6:29 Jesus answered and said to them, "This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He has sent."
      • Gal 5:6 For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but faith working through love.

Romans 1.1 - IMC Podcast

The Impact Master's Commission Podcast is BACK!  We are going back to the book of Romans again this year.  Join us!

  1. Written by Paul in the middle of his third missionary journey - he was in Corinth on his way to Jerusalem - Acts 20
  2. Written to "those called by God to be saints". So all followers of Jesus in Rome.  There were multiple people there in Rom that Paul knew and had ministered to before but this letter was as much to those he had never met as it was to those he had met
  3. Written to Rome at this time because he had an associate going there - Phoebe
    1. To announce his plans to visit
    2.  Make a full theological treatise on the Gospel that Paul preached so that they would be able to discuss it when he arrived
    3. Possibly to unify the Jew and Gentile factions of the church in Rome

The Gospel Exalted

1Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus,

  • He begins with his credentials -
    • remember they have never met him before.  they will have heard of him for sure, but they had not met him.  This is his first impression with them.  Both Jew and Greek and he wants them to know EXACTLY who he is and how he feels about Himself.
    • bond-servant - Slave - a specific kind of slave known to both Jew and Greek alike
      • this particular kind of slavery was voluntary.  They had chosen to BONDED to the household - out of love.
    • of Christ Jesus
      • Who’s slave you are makes all the difference in the world
      • Christ - “anointed one” “Messiah” Christ is NOT Jesus last name it is His title.  His function.  He is the anointed one.
        • Given authority - Saul, David, the other kings were ALL “anointed ones” meaning they were the true king by the authority of God
          • this is why they called him “the king of the Jews"
        • In this day it had taken on another meaning - the messiah - the last days figure that would rescue Israel and raise them up to take over the world
          • many of Jesus followers believed he was exactly this kind of ruler - AND HE WILL BE

called [as] an apostle,

  • His master Jesus has given him a task
    • Jesus called the original 12 during his earthly ministry - Paul was called but not until after Jesus resurrection
  • an apostle - SENT ONE
    • Called to go - I was called to be sent
    • Carried authority and responsibility - authority in the kingdom cannot be parted from responsibility and servitude

set apart for the gospel of God,

  • Her passion for him is not dimmed it has GROWN
    • that you were like a brother to me - she wishes she could express passion for him in the open without stirring the abuse of the bride.

5"Who is this coming up from the wilderness Leaning on her beloved?" "Beneath the apple tree I awakenedyou; There your mother was in labor with you, There she was in labor [and] gave you birth.

Song of Songs Part 4

1"How beautiful you are, my darling, How beautiful you are! Your eyes are [like] doves behind your veil; Your hair is like a flock of goats That have descended from Mount Gilead.

  • Hear the voice of Jesus singing over you! - He desires you - that is reality - he finds you enjoyable - beautiful
  • Your eyes are like doves behind your veil - he sees the depths of her

5"Your two breasts are like two fawns, Twins of a gazelle Which feed among the lilies.

  • There may be symbolic meanings here but I am not going into them now.  The point is that he knows every part of her.  He is familiar with everything about her AND HE ENJOYS every part of her.
    • we so often feel like there might be PART of us that God enjoys but that there are other realities in us he despises or wishes weren’t there.  Not the case.  He sees it all and he is delighted by it all.

6"Until the cool of the day When the shadows flee away, I will go my way to the mountain of myrrh And to the hill of frankincense.

  • He is committed to encounter us in every moment of our lives, and to stay in that place of encounter as often and as long as we need Him there.

7"You are altogether beautiful, my darling, And there is no blemish in you.

  • We simply don’t believe he means this - how can he say that when we are so flawed???
  • Again he is speaking of how HE SEES us, and He is not deluded.  He sees all of us, the end and the beginning and all of it in between
    • he loves the journey we are on
    • he loves the yes we are giving Him now
    • He knows his own power and ability to bring us to the end

11"Your lips, [my] bride, drip honey; Honey and milk are under your tongue, And the fragrance of your garments is like the fragrance of Lebanon.

  • The fruit of my lips - my songs  - my prayers - they are sweet and refreshing to him - Lebanon was known for its cedar trees - the pine smell

12"A garden locked is my sister, [my] bride, A rock garden locked, a spring sealed up.

  • ONLY for Him.  All my delights are ONLY for Him

13"Your shoots are an orchard of pomegranates With choice fruits, henna with nard plants,

  • Once again he comes to her as she is in the place of encounter but He is no longer there
  • She does not expect him

3"I have taken off my dress, How can I put it on [again]? I have washed my feet, How can I dirty them [again]?

  • She is not prepared for him -
  • she is hesitant to move from this place again

4"My beloved extended his hand through the opening, And my feelings were aroused for him.

  • He is reaching for her - calling for her!
    • He is “picking the lock of her heart"
    • Barnes - Put in his hand - Through (literally "from") the hole (of the lock), in order to raise the pins by which the bolt was fastened. The Oriental lock is a hollow piece of wood attached to the doorpost, into which a sliding-bolt is made to run. As soon as the bolt has been driven home a number of pins drop into holes prepared in it for their reception. To raise these pins, and so enable the bolt to be withdrawn, is to unfasten the lock. This is commonly done by means of the key (literally "opener"), but may often be accomplished by the fingers if dipped in paste or some other adhesive substance. For such a purpose the beloved inserts his fingers here anointed with the costly unguent, which will presently distil on those of the bride when she rises to open to him.
  • His calling STIRS her to move and change - to seek.

5"I arose to open to my beloved; And my hands dripped with myrrh, And my fingers with liquid myrrh, On the handles of the bolt.

  • she tries but it is difficult

6"I opened to my beloved, But my beloved had turned away [and] had gone! My heart went out [to him] as he spoke. I searched for him but I did not find him; I called him but he did not answer me.

  • He is gone
  • She calls but he doesn’t answer she missed Him

7"The watchmen who make the rounds in the city found me, They struck me [and] wounded me; The guardsmen of the walls took away my shawl from me.

  • She does what she did before - but it only ends in pain
  • The very ones who were supposed to lead her to him - abuse her
    • wounded me - they were abusive and hurtful
    • took away my shawl - left me exposed and embarrassed

8"I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, If you find my beloved, As to what you will tell him: For I am lovesick."

  • Here is her response - I am lovesick!
  • Not angry.
  • Adversity stokes the fire of her love

9"What kind of beloved is your beloved, O most beautiful among women? What kind of beloved is your beloved, That thus you adjure us?"

  • When the church sees this they WONDER at her passion and she begins to instruct them - even from her place of pain.
  • Her place of pain has become her ministry

Admiration by the Bride

10"My beloved is dazzling and ruddy, Outstanding among ten thousand.

  • ruddy - his face is flushed with desire!!
  • more desirable than all things

11"His head is [like] gold, pure gold; His locks are [like] clusters of dates [And] black as a raven.

  • His leadership and wisdom is perfect and delightful

12"His eyes are like doves Beside streams of water, Bathed in milk, [And] reposed in [their] setting.

  • HIS EYES are like doves!!! He is single minded!!! Desirous of ME!

13"His cheeks are like a bed of balsam, Banks of sweet-scented herbs; His lips are lilies Dripping with liquidmyrrh.

  • His emotions are deeply satisfying
  • His word is the delight of my heart

14"His hands are rods of gold Set with beryl; His abdomen is carved ivory Inlaid with sapphires.

  • His actions
  • His motives and His emotions again she speaks about His heart - it is precious

15"His legs are pillars of alabaster Set on pedestals of pure gold; His appearance is like Lebanon Choiceas the cedars.

  • He is swift and powerful
  • He is immovable unchangeable, sturdy and strong
  • He is majestic and mysterious deeply alluring

16"His mouth is [full of] sweetness. And he is wholly desirable. This is my beloved and this is my friend, O daughters of Jerusalem."

  • Again his WORD and the revelation of His word to her heart is sweet - delightful - WHOLLY DESIRABLE
    • the whole of him desires or delights
  • "Why should I endeavor to express His beauty piecemeal when He is in Himself and altogether the One longed-for, drawing all to love, compelling all to love, and inspiring with a longing (for His company) not only those who see, but also those who hear?” Theoderet

1"Where has your beloved gone, O most beautiful among women? Where has your beloved turned, That we may seek him with you?"

  • here it is! - that we may seek him with you!  Her passion stirs the passion of everyone around her!

2"My beloved has gone down to his garden, To the beds of balsam, To pasture [his flock] in the gardensAnd gather lilies.

3"I am my beloved's and my beloved is mine, He who pastures [his flock] among the lilies."

She realizes now that she knows where he is and that she can find him because he is waiting for her EXACTLY WHERE she asked him to be!  In the garden waiting for her.

4"You are as beautiful as Tirzah, my darling, As lovely as Jerusalem, As awesome as an army with banners.

He sees her beautiful as the royal city

As lovely as the chosen city

as “terrible” awe inspiring - and strong!! as an army with banners!

5"Turn your eyes away from me, For they have confused me; Your hair is like a flock of goats That have descended from Gilead.

This verse BLOWS MY CIRCUITS!!!!

Song of Songs Part 3

8"Listen! My beloved! Behold, he is coming, Climbing on the mountains, Leaping on the hills!

  • Jesus overcoming every obstacle to our hearts
  • He has defeated all of our enemies to come for us and make us his own
  • All the distance between us and God has been removed by the love of Jesus

9"My beloved is like a gazelle or a young stag.

  • Fast
  • Never slipping or tiring
  • Powerful, wildly alive

Behold, he is standing behind our wall, He is lookingthrough the windows, He is peering through the lattice.

  • Do you feel Jesus doing this for your heart?
  • Gazing longingly past all our defenses, past all our apathy, past all our fear, shame, and guilt past all we put in his way
  • His eyes like fire - burning for us
  • He is waiting for her. He desires her.
  • He comes when she does not expect him .
  • He is calling her out. He is standing there waiting for her. He is prepared for action and He wants a partner
  • He wants ALL of her.  He is jealous for her to become his 100%

gazing through the windows, -

  • Every point of entry to her life He will use to influence her to come out. He is revealing Himself to her as much as He can to entice her out. He wants her with Him but she won’t come.

looking through the lattice. –

  • He is looking through the bars of our self created prison. He is the one that put us here but we have the choice to come out or not.

10"My beloved responded and said to me, 'Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, And come along.

  • Leave your place of comfort and jump over the mountains with me
  • He has displayed His wildness and power to her and now He invites her INTO IT.  To JOIN him
  • Come with me to walk on the water and do the impossible
    • she asked for this!  Remember the bride’s desire from the beginning - let us run!  It goes beyond “let him kiss me” to now “let us run"

11For behold, the winter is past, The rain is over [and] gone.

12The flowers have [already] appeared in the land; The time has arrived for pruning [the vines], And the voice of the turtledove has been heard in our land.

  • I have removed the barriers
  • I have shifted the season
  • It is time for us to move from one place in this relationship to another.  The season of “sitting under the apple tree” is over.

13The fig tree has ripened its figs, And the vines in blossom have given forth [their] fragrance. Arise, my darling, my beautiful one, And come along!'"

  • He calls her at the beginning time - the time of planting - the time of new things
  • He calls her NOT BECAUSE SHE IS NOT ENOUGH - he says “my beautiful one” - this isn’t a call based on what she is not - this is a call because of her potential:
    • he is calling her to the destiny he created her for - HIS DREAM for Her
    • he is calling her to the destiny she desires! - HER DREAM for HERSELF

14"O my dove, in the clefts of the rock, In the secret place of the steep pathway, Let me see your form, Let me hear your voice; For your voice is sweet, And your form is lovely."

  • OH HEAR HIM SING THIS OVER YOU! - this is the honest expression of the emotion and desire of Jesus over you!
    • Let me see your form - your face
    • Let me hear your voice
    • they delight me!!!
  • she has lived in the secret place - he loves that about her - he loves the intimacy they have had
  • That intimacy is exactly WHY she is ready (according to his estimation) to run with Him.
    • Intimacy creates authority
  • NOW however he has left the place of intimacy in order to draw her out
    • His desire for her has not changed
    • His desire for the CONTEXT of their intimacy HAS changed
      • He doesn’t give HIS heart in pieces - but we do ours...

15"Catch the foxes for us, The little foxes that are ruining the vineyards, While our vineyards are in blossom."

  • There are small places - little things that she has not given Him
  • There are still levels of love she is not prepared to give
  • This is an important season where the little things must be attended to or fruitfulness (destiny) will be lost.

16"My beloved is mine, and I am his; He pastures [his flock] among the lilies.17"Until the cool of the day when the shadows flee away, Turn, my beloved, and be like a gazelle Or a young stag on the mountains of Bether."

Song of Songs Part 2

II. The Mystery of Grace (SONG 1:5-11)

5"I am black but lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem, Like the tents of Kedar, Like the curtains of Solomon.

  • I am very dark - she says to him.  I am dark like the tents of Kedar - as we first begin to approach the king we begin to understand that we are sinful and filthy.  We understand that, though we DESIRE HIM we do not DESERVE Him - we stumble, we screw up, we CANNOT make ourselves worthy of Him
    • spiritual immaturity is NOT the SAME as rebellion
  • Our response to our own ugliness is huge
    • do we run to him and receive forgiveness
    • do we punish ourselves until we feel better?
  • I am dark daughters of Jerusalem - she is not speaking to the King.  She is speaking to those who look on with amazement at his acceptance of her and she is speaking to herself!  She is saying “YES!  I will admit that he should not be choosing me, but He calls me lovely! He MAKES me lovely!
  • Dark like the tents of Kedar - lovely like the curtains of Solomon.  Ugly because of the mark of sin, but made beautiful because I am His dwelling place.  I CAN call myself beautiful because He HAS MADE ME BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
  • The strongest longing in the human heart is the longing to be enjoyed by God - he does not just tolerate us, or put up with us.
    • We are delighted in by God, he takes pleasure in our
    • confidence in love - I honestly believe that he adores me - I honestly believe that my love moves His heart

6"Do not stare at me because I am swarthy, For the sun has burned me. My mother's sons were angry with me; They made me caretaker of the vineyards, [But] I have not taken care of my own vineyard.

  • YES I AM dark - but in Him I am lovely...  I am the loved failure, the forgiven sinner, the justified!  Ezekiel 16:14 14 And uyour renown went forth among the nations because of your beauty, for it was perfect through the splendor that I had bestowed on you, declares the Lord God.
  • She is embarrassed by her darkness.  She does not wish to be seen by others.  She is making excuses. - She knows He says she is beautiful but she has once again listened to the opinion of man.  She has once again allowed the sideways view to overtake her.  She is not receiving her identity from His love but from those around her and she begins to make excuses for her darkness.
  • She blames the work of the Lord for her darkness now.  her duty, her “calling” has destroyed her.  She is not the problem “the church” is and it has made her forget what he has done for her.  She is bitter toward her brother’s in Christ and beginning to be bitter toward the Lord. Hear the cynicism and anger in her next utterance! vs 7 which is directed toward the Lord Himself.

7"Tell me, O you whom my soul loves, Where do you pasture [your flock], Where do you make [it] lie downat noon? For why should I be like one who veils herself Beside the flocks of your companions?"

  • Oh she is not happy!  Where is this satisfaction you promised?  Where is the rest?  Why do I feel like a stranger an outsider?  One who does not belong here?  She is asking probing questions.  How did I get lost if I am your “beloved”?  How did I get so far away and WHY didn’t I know where you were going?
  • She does the RIGHT THING!  - she goes back to the FIRST CRY - Let Him Kiss Me! - she returns to the desire that brought her to him in the first place
  • all of this arises from her turning away from His declaration of loveliness to what others had spoken of her.  She let them define her and what it was she was supposed to be doing and she lost Him!  Now she is lost, broken, bitter, and alone, but HE is gracious!

Solomon, the Lover, Speaks

8"If you yourself do not know, Most beautiful among women, Go forth on the trail of the flock And pastureyour young goats By the tents of the shepherds.

  • If you yourSELF do not know -
    • this is about YOU and HIM
    • Good teachers cannot give it to you
    • fervent work in the kingdom cannot do it
    • you have to know HIM in the depth of who you are
  • O most beautiful among women - I love it!  He says to her. “remember that I have called you beautiful!  Remember your identity with me and come and rest among my people.
    • All of the labor that you have expended to try and make yourself beautiful for me has done nothing but wear you out.
    • Feed those around you by leading them to me and both of you rest, here among the dwellings of those who have stayed close to me.”
  • He calls her back to the fellowship which she blames for her lostness, and back to submission to His ways, and His leadership.  THERE will she find rest and satisfaction!
  • There is something so important about the body of Christ!  Something so vital!  To find Him we have to hang with THEM.  It is often our unforgiveness andanger with the church that takes us away from Jesus.

9"To me, my darling, you are like My mare among the chariots of Pharaoh.

  • Mares were not used to pull Pharaohs chariots!  He is saying that when he sees her all others women look like men.  She is His one and only.  His chosen one.  He has eyes for only her.
  • I do not have you in my heart because you are my workhorse
  • I chose you to delight in you and for YOU to delight in me!

10"Your cheeks are lovely with ornaments, Your neck with strings of beads."

  • He has MADE her beautiful - Psalm 149:4 “For the Lord takes pleasure in his people; he adorns the humble with salvation.
  • your cheeks - speak of her emotions - blushing etc - she has learned to hear Him and align her emotional state with His reality
  • He causes his people to see her beauty and recognize who she is in him.

11"We will make for you ornaments of gold With beads of silver."

12"While the king was at his table, My perfume gave forth its fragrance.

  • He brings her in and is feeding her and adorning her with grace - worship is released - adoration for him is renewed and strengthened
  • She begins to understand how HE feels about HER and THAT releases the fragrance of worship, adoration

13"My beloved is to me a pouch of myrrh Which lies all night between my breasts.

  • Myrrh is symbolic of death - His cross and the fragrance of his cross is in your nose all day and all night.
  • we sit in the cross - we think on it - we consider it - chew on the cross
  • the myrrh they wore would be their perfume - the cross' fragrance marks us

14"My beloved is to me a cluster of henna blossoms In the vineyards of Engedi."

  • a truly delightful refreshing fragrance
  • he is so refreshing
  • he is so delightful!
  • we should ENJOY GOD!!!

15"How beautiful you are, my darling, How beautiful you are! Your eyes are [like] doves."

  • He RESPONDS to our worship
  • as we enjoy HIM HE enjoys US!
  • he states again how he feels about us.
  • your eyes are like doves - single focus - one desire - single minded

16"How handsome you are, my beloved, [And] so pleasant! Indeed, our couch is luxuriant!17"The beams of our houses are cedars, Our rafters, cypresses.

  • His pleasure in us fans the flame of our passion for HIM!
  • If you want to love Jesus just begin to seek to experience HIS love and pleasure in you!
  • enjoying him and being enjoyed by him is the pathway to intimacy and satisfaction

The Bride’s Admiration

1"I am the rose of Sharon, The lily of the valleys."

  • She begins to believe that she IS who he has said she is!!

2"Like a lily among the thorns, So is my darling among the maidens."

  • Like a lily among the thorns so is my darling among the maidens
    • He calls her delightful among the punishing.  enjoyable among the difficult.  He says to her - my delight is in you!
    • The Lord loves all those he created - but there is a special love he has for those who have opened to him - Look at the difference here between the soft open lily and the hardened and difficult thorns and brambles - Jesus said it was the poor in spirit who would inherit the kingdom - the meek who inherit the earth - Psalm 51:17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
    • also note the productivity of the flower which is the part of the flower that is fertilized - that brings fruit in the fruit trees - her openness and vulnerability is beautiful and a pleasing fragrance before the Lord.
    • Look at what his simple statement of affection does to open her heart!!!! - 1 John 4:19 - we love him because he first loved us!

3"Like an apple tree among the trees of the forest, So is my beloved among the young men. In his shade I took great delight and sat down, And his fruit was sweet to my taste.

  • Apples were an aphrodesiac.  The fragrance represented virility and health.
    • his presence stirs her desire
    • He is fruitful.  He is beneficial
  • Being with him is a place of comfort, shelter, protection, peace, and pleasure

4"He has brought me to [his] banquet hall, And his banner over me is love.

  • the house of wine
  • In the Hebrew it literally means house of wine
    • An upper room where all his treasure is kept Clarke
    • Esther took he king to the house of wine
  • His banner over me is love
    • His eternal declaration over us is his love for us.
    • We wear on our heads a declaration of love
  • he lets everyone know that I am His beloved
    • Unreserved, unrestrained

Your love is wild, Your love is wild for me

      It isn’t shy, it’s unashamed

Your love is proud to be seen with me

    • Uncontrolled, un-contained

Your love is a fire burning bright for me

It’s not just a spark, it’s not just a flame

Your love is a light, and all the world will see

      Your love’s not fractured

      It’s not a troubled mind

It isn’t anxious, it’s not the restless kind

      Your love’s not passive

      It’s never disengaged

      It’s always present

It hangs on every word we say

Love keeps its promises, it keeps its word

It honors what’s sacred, cause its vows are good

      Your love’s not broken

      It’s not insecure

Your love’s not selfish, Your love is pure

5"Sustain me with raisin cakes, Refresh me with apples, Because I am lovesick.

  • Raisins are ANOTHER aphrodisiac
  • This is a request - give me the ability to love him MORE - to desire HIM MORE
  • I am LOVESICK - it’s TOO MUCH!!! - I CANNOT sustain this -
    • Raisins and apples were given for stamina in love making
    • This is the call of the bride to love him more - to be able to
    • She is asking for the grace to stand under his outpouring of love for her
6His left hand is under my head,
and his right hand embraces me!
    • Uh... I think you know what is happening here.
    • Intimacy -
    7I adjure you,c O daughters of Jerusalem,
by the gazelles or the does of the field,
that you not stir up or awaken love
    until it pleases.
    • A comment to the young virgin about loving inappropriately
    • This love demands everything don't ask for it until you are ready to become consumed by its fire

6"Let his left hand be under my head And his right hand embrace me.” 7"I adjure you, O daughters of Jerusalem, By the gazelles or by the hinds of the field, That you do not arouse or awaken [my] love Until she pleases."

Song of Songs Intro

Should we read this book as an allegory?

  1. We need a good reason to read any portion of scripture as allegory
  2. The history:
    • The primary way both the Jewish and Christian scholars have interpreted it as allegory
  3. This is the Song of Songs
    • solomon wrote 1005 songs this is the only one he named thus: the song from which all songs spring
      • the song to end all songs
      • the “meta” song
      • not just a tale about a guy and a girl
  4. To sexy!

Why we NEED the Song of Solomon:

  1. God is a passionate emotional God - we need to feel it - WHO HE IS
    • and often romantic or poetic language is a better doorway into experience of God’s emotions
    • he enjoys us! - it is so hard to believe this! - we must ENCOUNTER it
  2. The first Commandment - WHO HE WE ARE
    • We are the people of the First Commandment - Matt 22:37 37And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38This is the great and first commandment.
      • To love God is the highest calling the thing God desires of us most is our love for Him
    • If we want to love God we must have revelation knowledge of His love for us - Beholding and becoming
      • 1 John 4:19 - we love because he first loved us
      • Ephesians 3:17 - 20 - that you would KNOW the love of God in all its dimensions -  17so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, 18may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, 19and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
      • 1 John 3:2 - we will be like him for we will see him as he is
      • 2 Cor 3:18 - 18And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord,e are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.

Make this YOUR song:

  1. Take this song to the secret place!  Let it become the love language between you and Jesus!
    • this is true of the whole Bible
    • When you are given something to believe - a truth about God or yourself
      • thank you for this
      • help me to know it in fullness - show me more
      • I want to experience this beyond head knowledge
    • When you are commanded to do something - told to obey
      • forgive me
      • help me obey it
      • help me understand it
    • Eph 3:17 - KNOW - epignosis - experiential knowledge

We are going to walk through the journey the Bride goes on as she moves in toward Him.

I - The Cry for knowledge and her early decision to belong to him and be His completely forever (SONG 1:1-4)

1The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s. - we already went there

2"May he kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine.

  1. This is a prayer - LET HIM - please I want him to kiss me!  She is asking somebody.
  2. the kisses of his mouth - the kisses of His word
    • Jewish scribes said the kisses of the Torah
    • ENCOUNTER with His Word upon our heart - walk in the revelation of God’s heart
    • the spirit of wisdom and revelation Eph 1:17
    • Isaiah 62 - He will not be silent he will not be quiet
    • This is the request the begins the journey of the rest of this book - she returns to this request over and over it is the chief cry of her heart and it should be the chief cry of ours!!!!
      • Intimacy
      • the request to know Him more - IS the request to love Him more - IS the request to be more like Him
    • My journal - vs 2 I exult again in the opening cry of this song.  How this cry must have captured Solomon’s heart to give it the preeminence he has.  The cry for intimate experiential knowledge of the love of the king.  This is the cry that begins the journey of the bride from orphan farm girl to exalted queen beloved of the king.  So I take up the cry today.  “Father let Jesus come and kiss me with the kisses of His mouth!!  Let the fire of love be kindled again in my cold heart by the Ever Living Word!  Let me hear Isaiah 62 again that you will NOT be quiet nor even keep silent when you are speaking over me!”
  3. Your love is better than wine
    • Love feels good! - intoxicating - we lose ourselves - enjoying God is righteousness -
    • being satisfied in God is the opposite of Sin - Jer 2:12-13

"For My people have committed two evils: They have forsaken Me, The fountain of living waters, To hewfor themselves cisterns, Broken cisterns That can hold no water.

    • Psalm 36:8 - the river of your pleasure
    • Psalm 16:11 - eternal pleasures at your right hand
    • Intimacy:
      • sex is a picture of our intimacy with God and it IS really good - FOR A REASON - our intimacy with God is far above and beyond
      • takes time to develop
      • requires total vulnerability and trust
      • is the fountain of righteousness and joy in God
      • Matt 6:6 - go into your room and CLOSE THE DOOR
      • book secrets of the secret place - Bob Sorge
    • Journal - Yes I see that your love is better than all the other things I would use to gladden my heart.  Yes I believe that your love is the one thing that will satisfy the groaning of my inward man.  Yes I understand that I was formed to be loved by the king of kings.  Yes I understand that this is my calling and my inheritance.  Father do this in me for real again.  I want the kisses because I know your love is better.  I choose your love by faith in how much better it really is.

3"Your oils have a pleasing fragrance, Your name is [like] purified oil; Therefore the maidens love you.

  1. oils have a pleasing fragrance
    • Journal - Your anointing oils are fragrant -Psalm 45:8 -your robes are fragrant with myrrh and aloes and cassia - Your authority is sweet to me.  Your priestly office over me is so wonderful and obvious.  You are a good high priest for me.  You minister to me and take care of me.  You have made peace between me and God.  You are the Messiah - the anointed one. Isaiah 61 - the one who brings good news to this poor man.  The one who binds up my broken heart. My shattered dreams, my foolish losses, my bruised and battered psyche; this bruised reed you did not break, this flickering flame you did not snuff out!  You have proclaimed liberty to this captive and a release from all my bondage!  You proclaim over me the end of my waiting, my languishing and the reality that my cries have been heard and my rescuer is come.  You proclaim over me the year of the favor of the Lord!!!!   My mourning over the dead promises over my life is at an end!!!
  2. Your name is purified oil
    • Your name is like perfume poured out! - The glory of who you are is pleasing to me. Psalm 27:4 You are the one thing I wish to behold and to experience.  That I might dwell in the house of the Lord for all the days of my life.  To gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire at His temple.  Father set me again to gazing.  Set me again to beholding and becoming.  It is your glory oh Lord that I desire to behold.  To really know you as you are.  You are so satisfying.  The more I learn of you the more I want to learn!  I deeply love your nature.  You are Daddy God.  You are a jealous groom.  You are a Righteous Judge.  You are a Sovereign King!  You are all of this and more and I want to know all that you are!  I want to know deeply each of these realities and love them deeply.
  3. therefore virgins love you. - All of Heaven adores you.  All of earth desires you.  All that I am was made for you.  You ARE all together lovely!  All that is will bow before your glory and I choose to do so now.  Whenever I get a glimpse of you I am overwhelmed.  When I get a view of all that you are and all that you do I am undone with longing.  Show me again.  Undo me again.  Unhinge me again.  Awaken me again to my desperate desire for all of your glory.  Let desperation stir faith in the depths of me.

4"Draw me after you [and] let us run [together]! The king has brought me into his chambers." "We will rejoice in you and be glad; We will extol your love more than wine. Rightly do they love you."

  1. Draw me after you
  2. Journal 4 Draw me after you; let us run. - YES draw me after you I am incapable of coming in my own strength.  Woo me!  pull me!  draw me!!!! I want to move toward you.  So move toward me.The king has brought me into his chambers. - I love this.  It does NOT say “I entered into the chambers of the king - it says “The king has brought me in”  It shows my weakness beside His desire and strength.  You have brought me in.  Nothing I could do could have done it.  Nothing I could have tried could have done it.  YOU HAVE BROUGHT ME IN.  Bring me in again!  I want to be there even now King of kings.  Take me in now!  Let Him Kiss ME!!!  YOU have done this!!! YOU YOU YOU!!!! You chose to!  You delight in doing this!  YOU make me yours.  Thank you - the king has brought me into his chambers..... how can this be?  but here I am.  Oh your love for me is great.  I need nothing moreWe will exult and rejoice in you; we will extol your love more than wine; Who is this voice?  The angels?  The Holy Spirit?  Other believers?  The reality is it may be all of the above!  The angels are spirits sent to serve the beloved of God, the Holy Spirit is the one who is the mark of this union; the one who will point only to Jesus and give us all that is his.  Other believers are meant to encourage each other in our running after Christ.  It is beautiful.  Truly all of creation is the benefactor of the union of Jesus and His bride.  All of creation groans and waits for the revelation of the sons of God.  We are the first fruits of the recreation of all that is! rightly do they love youOh rightly do they love you Jesus!  Rightly does all of creation worship you Jesus!  You are SO worthy!  So beautiful!  rightly rightly rightly do we all love you!  Desire of the nations!

Ephesians 6 Last Half - The Armor of God

  • This is a fight - a real fight with real consequences -
    • a real race with a real prize - a real war with a real enemy
  • Know your enemy - you are not fighting against the other racers!!! - it is easy when we enter into the race to think of the other racers as the enemy - Paul says NOPE -
    • we have a real enemy but it is not the other racers it is Satan and His demons - it is the atmosphere in which we race - the course and the weather, and our own weakness.  You are fighting against them no one else!
    • Stop blaming the other racers for you difficulty!!
  • Know your helpThe apostle Paul begins to describe the strength of the Lord by using the metaphor or the armor of God - He is calling us to understand the help we’ve been given!  More than enough help to win the race
    • Loins girded with truth - I don’t want to say what it is…. certain supportive garments….. people wear to make it easier to be vigorously active….. you can fill in the blank….
      • The point is! - Jesus said you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.
      • The truth frees us to run / move without difficulty
        • the truth about God
        • the truth about ourselves
        • the truth about those around us
    • Breastplate of righteousness - the heart monitor of righteousness
      • This isn’t our righteousness he’s talking about - this isn’t the apostle Paul saying “ya’ll better be good out there!"
      • We PUT ON the righteousness of Christ Jesus
      • I call it the heart monitor because it checks our pulse for us - when we daily put on the righteousness of Jesus we are doing a heart check with the Lord - reconnecting with the one who is our righteousness and aligning our hearts with him again.  When we are in touch with His righteousness and our hearts go out of sink with His we will know it.
    • The preparation of the Gospel of Peace on your feet
      • The running shoes of peace
      • a firm foundation - because of the Gospel we have peace with God - the wrath of God is not hanging over our heads - fear
    • the shield of faith - the sunblock of faith
      • protects from the fiery darts of the enemy - the sun!  As you know my family and I are gingers we fight a daily battle with the sun.
      • in running you are exposed to the rays of the sun and you can get burned!  - this world we live in is a constant attack on the belief system we hold.  It tells us every day that God’s ways are foolish, that God doesn’t exist or is irrelevant,  that we cannot trust Him
      • A daily application of the sunblock of faith restores our resistance
    • the helmet of salvation - the sweat band of righteousness
      • the emblem - the helmets served to protect the head but also bore symbols of their gods emblems of the strength a lion an eagle etc.  they were telling themselves covering their minds with the knowledge of who was helping them fight the battle - when I was a kid just putting on a nike emblem psyched me out.. I can do this!
      • protect the eyes - a sweat band keeps sweat and hair OUT of your eyes - you cannot see to run if you have an eye problem - being reminded of the hope of our salvation gives us eyes to see the path we are really on.
      • Jesus said if our eyes were dark our whole being would be dark we have to set our eyes and our minds on things above. Col 3:1-31 If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.
2 Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth.
3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
    • the sword of the spirit - the Word of God
      • Praying in the Spirit with all supplication  - get that sword OUT use it in prayer and clean house!!

18With all prayer and petition pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, 19and [pray] on my behalf, that utterance may be given to me in the opening of my mouth, to make known with boldness the mystery of the gospel, 20for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in [proclaiming] it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.

21But that you also may know about my circumstances, how I am doing, Tychicus, the beloved brother and faithful minister in the Lord, will make everything known to you. 22I have sent him to you for this very purpose, so that you may know about us, and that he may comfort your hearts.

23Peace be to the brethren, and love with faith, from God the Father and the Lord JesusChrist. 24Grace be with all those who love our Lord Jesus Christ with incorruptible [love].

Ephesians 6 First Half

1Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right.

  • We continue to talk about “submit to one another in the fear of Christ” - this is the next category of that
  • children - someone who is under the care of their parents - someone who is not responsible for themselves legally
  • obey - it does not say obey - it says listen to - that is not LESS than Obey it is MORE than Obey
    • when you don’t want to
    • when you have heard it a million times before
    • ACTUALLY listen don’t just imagine you already know what they are going to say
    • CONSIDER - THINK - challenge yourself - am I right about this?
    • God and parents are not interested in robotic obedience - they are interested in loving, respectful, thoughtful obedience to the HEART of what they said not just to their instructions!
  • "in the Lord” -
    • Not to the point of disobeying God
    • It is a part of your obedience to God - if you are dishonoring your parents you are dishonoring God
  • Family is a reflection of our relationship with God:
    • God gave us Fathers, AND Mothers to teach us about Him
      • about how he feels about us
      • about how we should feel about Him
      • about how and WHY we should do what He says
        • obeying God is NOT about a dictator holding authority over our heads saying “do this or else"
        • God is a king and he is Sovereign - and that is the best news anyone could ever get.
          • He is a dictator - but not a tyrant
          • He is love - He is FOR US
          • He has all resource - and NEVER STOPS GIVING
        • IT is ALL about HIM and that is so GREAT!
      • When our parents love us - really love us - it is such good news that they are in charge of our welfare

Prophetic Class - Authority from Intimacy

Rev 19:10

10Then I fell down at his feet to worship him, but he said to me, “You must not do that! I am a fellow servant with you and your brothers who hold to the testimony of Jesus. Worship God.” For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.

“I am Gabriel who stands in the presence of God"

Testimony - personal experience

John 15:15 - I no longer call you servants

Jesus is looking for partnership - friendship - that is the fountainhead of prophecy

Jesus in the Garden - will you not tarry with me?

Abraham - Gen 18 - God stops and talks to Abraham

The Judge is emotional about what he does

Ezekiel 22:30 - I looked for an intercessor!
