Sermon on the Mount Episode 2 - Blessed are Those Who Mourn

  1. Mourning because of our brokenness and failure - not being ok with staying the same
    • which leads to repentance
    • which leads to dependance on God
    • which leads us back to poverty of spirit - the deep down understanding that we without Christ we can do nothing!
      • John 15:5 5I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
  2. Mourning out of pain and loss
    • We are so convinced that it is important that we are impregnable impervious
      • we refuse to mourn -
      • we put on a smile -
      • we distract ourselves.
      • we ask people not to tell anyone.
    • Pain is a friend - pain is a treasure -
      • as we turn to the Lord and His great promises -
        • Romans 8:28 -
      • as we turn to one another and we are encouraged
  3. BECAUSE we will be comforted -
    • there are those who refuse to be comforted - the whole world is falling apart!
      • They refuse to receive hope and help
      • they refuse good advice
      • It will never get any better...
    • When we weep with the one who can do all things we know that our weeping will come to an end! - BECAUSE of HIM

Sermon on the Mount

What was it Jesus was doing here?  How do we read / Hear this sermon? -

17"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill. 18"For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished. 19"Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others [to do] the same, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches [them], he shall be calledgreat in the kingdom of heaven.

20"For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses [that] of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enterthe kingdom of heaven.

He is rewriting the law in the ears of his hearers.  Rewriting it the way it was originally meant to be read and heard.  He is giving us our interpretive key for the Old Testament.  He is unlearning them the things they had heard and understood from their culture and from their rabbis.

The Sermon on the Mount; The Beatitudes

1When Jesus saw the crowds, He went up on the mountain; and after He sat down, His disciples came to Him. 2He opened His mouth and [began] to teach them, saying,

3"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

  • Lets start at the beginning - Lets get one thing straight
    • Realize your poverty
    • Romans 11:35 -  35Or WHO HAS FIRST GIVEN TO HIM THAT IT MIGHT BE PAID BACK TO HIM AGAIN?
    • You know nothing and have nothing to bring to the table.  You are compeletly wrong in the way you look at the world.  Start by taking every idea in your head and realizing it is worthless.
    • Our lives are a vapor - here one minute and gone the next
    • Anything we have came to us from God in the first place
    • Anything we do or make -
      • the ability to do that thing came from God
      • because we are innately flawed and broken everything we do and or create is deeply flawed and broken as well
    • we have no ability to be righteous
    • we have no ability to be truly and deeply good because within our own attempts to be good there are motives which are selfish and broken.
    • happy are those who realize that they have nothing, God owes them nothing - they live in the full and constant knowledge of their spiritual, tangible and moral bankruptcy - we have a word for this attitude - Repentance
  • Jesus is clearing the table - Don’t think you can add what I am saying to your store of spiritual knowledge - this isn’t a conversation - Joy will be found in the abandonment of all the stuff you have in your hands

  • Why are these people happy?????? - “for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven” - all of it.  The Kingdom belongs to those who know the truth about themselves - we have nothing - But God would give us everything!
    • Luke 18:16 But Jesus called for them, saying, "Permit the children to come to Me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
    • Luke 12:32 - Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has chosen gladly to give you the kingdom.
    • Isaiah 57:15 - For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy, I dwell in the high and holy place: with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones
    • James 4:6 - But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
    • Psalm 14:6 - You would shame the plans of the poor,
  • It is only in this place of spiritual poverty that we can begin to receive from God -
    • Only a cup that is empty can be filled
    • Only a student who knows nothing can learn everything
    • Matt 19:23-24 23And Jesus said to his disciples, “Truly, I say to you, only with difficulty will a rich person enter the kingdom of heaven. 24Again I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God.”
      • "the eye of a needle” - was the small “door-size” gate that was left open at night.  Camel’s could not get through it while carrying anything on their backs and even then they would be forced to get down on all thier knees and crawl.

  • The kingdom of heaven cannot be earned - It can only be given.
  • The kingdom of heaven can only be received by GRACE as a gift from God
    • Gal 2:21I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousnessc were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose.
    • Rom 11:6 But if it is by grace, it is no longer on the basis of works; otherwise grace would no longer be grace.
  • If you attempt to earn grace you will lose it -

Philippians 2

  • The Lord takes us BEYOND love your neighbor as yourself - He goes to “Love each other even as I have loved you” John 13:34
  • Christus Exemplar - We are to mirror Him in this attitude - this understanding - this way of thinking
    • I want to love what you love - “I don’t want any thought in my head that wasn’t in His(God’s) first” Bill Johnson
  • Jesus deserves all honor - glory - obedience - worship - those are HIS by right - that was never important to Him
  • He did not consider the throne an end in itself
  • His POWER was a means to an end - Saving you.
  • He emptied Himself - of position - privilege - platform - rights - fame - honor
  • He became a servant
  • He became soil - humans from the humus
  • The sovereign - FREE one - be came obediant - even to death on the Cross
  • What right did the Romans have to prosecute God?
  • What right did the Jews have to bring accusation against God?
  • Still he became obedient
  • Even to the point of the most horrible death imaginable
  • Resist the urge to return to a success worshipping narrative
  • Servanthood became exalted
  • God’s way of love - the emptying of oneself - becomes the definition of rulership
  • The LACK of brute force - defeats the might makes right believers
  • Giving beats receiving
  • Mercy triumphs over judgement - James 2:13
  • Forgiving wins over accusation
  • Releasing crushes retribution
  • Reconciliation

Philippians 1 End of Chapter

  1. 27Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you orremain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;
    • When we conduct ourselves in a manner worthy of the Gospel:
      • "The gospel is not a thing of nothing; nor is it intended that it should exert no influence on its friends.” Barnes
      • it will gain a reputation - it will be noted and spoken of - “they noted these men had been with Jesus”
      • it will last - standing firm
      • it will be unified - in one spirit, with one mind
        • "he requires a twofold unity -- of spirit and soul. The first is, that we have like views; the second, that we be united in heart. For when these two terms are connected together, spiritus (spirit) denotes the understanding, while anima (soul) denotes the will. Farther, agreement of views comes first in order; and then from it springs union of inclination.” Calvin
        • thinking alike
        • feeling alike
        • sharing the same value system - CARING about one another
      • striving TOGTHER for the faith of the Gospel
        • we are all working hard (striving)
          • real effort to be given to learning to love God an love people
          • real work and effort expended in loving sacrificially - it is costly and has WORTH
            • caring for the body
            • reaching out to the lost
            • ministering to the hurt and broken
        • we are all working together
          • we do not do this work alone we do it AS A TRIBE
          • Jesus is working with us and through us by His Spirit
        • we are all working toward and out of our faith in the finished work of Jesus on the Cross
          • none of our work is toward being accepted by God but flows naturally and joyfully out of our state of being accepted.
          • None of our work is accomplished by our own strength but flows as we rely on the strength and power God supplies as we cooperate with what He is doing in the earth.
  2. 28in no way alarmed by [your] opponents-- which is a sign of destruction for them, but of salvation for you, and that [too], from God.
    • we are not afraid
    • our lack of fear speaks to them of their reason to be afraid
    • our lack of fear speaks to US of our sure confidence in God’s power and provision for us.
  3. 29For to you it has been granted for Christ's sake, not only to believein Him, but also to suffer for His sake,
    • it has been GRANTED - to show favor - this is the same root as the word for the spiritual gifts
      • suffering is a gift granted by Jesus.
  4. 30experiencing the same conflict which you saw in me, and now hear [to be] in me.

Philippians 1:18-26

  1. 19for I know that this will turnout for my deliverance through your prayers and the provision of the Spirit of Jesus Christ,
  2. 20according to my earnest expectation and hope, that I will not be put to shame in anything, but [that] with all boldness, Christ will even now, as always, be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death.
    1. Here it is Paul’s highest desire.  Christ exalted
  3. 21For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
    • One of those beautiful Pauline statements that I love so much
    • to live is Christ - to live is to give my life for His purpose here on earth and I love that
    • to die is to go be with Christ - I love that
  4. 22But if [I am] to live [on] in the flesh, this [will mean] fruitful laborfor me; and I do not know which to choose.
    • Did God give him the choice? - that is entirely possible.
  5. 23But I am hard-pressed from both [directions], having the desire to depart and be with Christ, for [that] is very much better;
    • He desires Heaven - honestly - he counts it better than this place:  Father teach me to love Heaven more than earth
      • is this what it looks like to store up treasure in Heaven - Jesus said that is where our heart would be - where our treasure is.
    • Heaven is desirable because it means being with Jesus
  6. 24yet to remain on in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.
    • His care for his churches is so deep he would choose suffering and difficulty if it means their good.
    •
  7. 25Convinced of this, I know that I will remain and continue with you all for your progress and joy in the faith,
    • for your progress and joy in the faith - that is a beautiful description what ministry is to be aiming for.
    • progress brought about by chopping down what stands in the way! - hacking through the undergrowth to make a path forward
    • joy in the faith - we cannot forget that it is the desire of the Lord that we have joy in the faith! - are we working for the joy of our people to be grounded in and flowing powerfully out of FAITH in Christ?
  8. 26so that your proud confidence in me may abound in Christ Jesus through my coming to you again.
    • your boast in me - not sure how I feel about that.
    • I know I desire this.  I want to be a mentor people are grateful for.

Philippians 1:12-18

  1. 11having been filled with the fruit of righteousnesswhich [comes] through Jesus Christ, to the glory and praise of God.
    • that the gift of righteousness we have been given by Christ would be in obvious manifestation out of us.
    • a people who feel, think, act, and speak like Jesus all the time
    • that the WORLD would see, the angels would see, the heavenly powers would see, and know that God is glorious and praise Him
  2. 12Now I want you to know, brethren, that my circumstances have turned out for the greater progress of the gospel,
    • his circumstances are imprisonment as you can see in the next verse
    • but he is not upset about that - His aim is being reached - “greater progress of the gospel"
      • this is all he wants to see happen - it is the point of his entire life.
    • He is perhaps also telling the church that just because he is in prison does not mean that the grace and power of God have left Him
    • This is also where he wrote Ephesians, Colossians and obviously Philippians
  3. 13so that my imprisonment in [the cause of] Christ has become well known throughout the wholepraetorian guard and to everyone else,
    • His place of difficulty has become an opportunity for influence - this is always God’s plan
    • This is God’s doing NOT man's
  4. 14and that most of the brethren, trusting in the Lord because of my imprisonment, have far more courage to speak the word of God without fear.
    • HIs place of pain is a point of encouragement and motivation to those around him.
  5. 15Some, to be sure, are preachingChrist even from envy and strife, but some also from good will;
    • some were glad Paul was in prison so they no longer had to compete with him in the Gospel - wow that is so…. normal.
    • some are looking to his example and are seeing that:
      • They saw that Paul had joy in the midst of such a trial.
      • They saw that God would take care of Paul in such circumstances.
      • They saw that God could still use Paul even when he was imprisoned.

  6. 16the latter [do it] out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel
    • those who are not competing with Paul know that he has a purpose and God is using his circumstance for that purpose
  7. 17the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment.
    • it fascinates me that there were those who already were using the Gospel to propel themselves forward - God guard me!
  8. 18What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,
    • He doesn’t even have anger for those who preach to serve themselves
    • He just wants to see the message go forward even through imperfect vessels
    • He rejoices because God will use anything he can use to further his purposes!
    • Paul chooses to rejoice in the Lord

  1. 10so that you may approve the things that are excellent, in order to be sincere and blameless until the day of Christ;
    • That Love born of experience and marked by clarity would be the fountainhead of the behavior and moral judgment of the body of Christ.
    • That We would LOVE what God Loves and HATE what HE hates
    • in order to be sincere - not fake - not hypocritical - REAL
    • blameless - not stumbling or causing to stumble
